Classic Sports Car Magazine Mike McCarthy This 192-page biography is about an important automotive pioneer who, as the title says, is all but forgotten. Like many US biographies, it consists basically of finances and politics, unlike British books which tend to emphasize technology, but its an absorbing read. Winton was famous for his cross-country exploits, his efforts at the Gordon Bennet races, and his hiring of Barney Oldfield (for $2500, and that was in 1903!), before giving up racing and taking up the manufacture of Diesel engines. A pity it isn't more technical - Winton held dozens of patents and it would be fascinating to know more about the most significant. Well illustrated, including a year-by-year run-down of major models. |
